Iron Bars…Prison or Freedom? Cultural insights in the Dominican Republic…and a short story

The view from our balcony in San Francisco de Macoris. The majority of houses and apartments have iron bars over windows, doors and balconies.
For most North Americans, bars over windows brings unease or fear. The view through the bars is not only obstructed but reminds one of a prison cell.
I was concerned about our twins falling down the stairs you see here so I suggested a gate at the top of the stairs. When the design was shared with me it was a metal “cage” at the top of the stairs. I was a little shocked and discussed with my father-in-law how it would block the view. He said it wouldn’t affect the view at all and was perfect for security (robberies). Funny. It all started with concern for falling and evolved into security issues.
In the Dominican Republic, most houses do indeed have these iron bars to prevent entry. Many houses have spikes or electrified fences as well. Yes, theft is an issue.
I was explaining to my wife how it tarnishes the view and she said, “here, the more iron the more beautiful it is.” We laughed about this. I asked, “Why not make a solid wall of metal?”
The little bears in prison. I guess they are less likeky to fall.

Soon we will have a beautiful cage.
